This Page focuses on the use in Chinese of 一边 (yibian) twice in one sentence to show that two tasks are being performed simultaneously. The grammatical structure is as follows:
一边 + verb, 一边 + verb
In English we can use while to indicate this, for example I listen to music while doing my homework is the same as:
1) 我一边听音乐一边做作业
Wǒ yībiān tīng yīnyuè yībiān zuò zuo yè
I am listening to music while doing my homework
Another way we might translate yibian…. yibian into English is: as he +verb …he +verb. See the example below:
2)他一边跑一边大声叫:帮助我!
tā yībiān pǎo yībiān dàshēngjiào: bāngzhù wǒ!
As he ran he shouted: Help Me!
边。。。边。
Note that in some cases, especially when speaking, the yi 一 part of this sentence can be omitted. Check out the sentence below:
我是土家族人我喜欢跳摆手舞很多人一起边长边跳。
Wǒshì Tǔjiāzú rén wǒ xǐhuan tiào bǎishǒu wǔ hěn duōrén yīqǐ biān cháng biān tiào
I am a Tujia person we like to dance. We hold hands and sing and dance at the same time.
