Do you know the meaning of the characters 口,耳 and 目?Would you like to learn to read, pronounce adnd write the characters for these and other body parts? Also included in this class is a focus on the verbs for sit and stand: 坐 and 站, as well as several other verbs related to daily life.

In this video we learn some new vocabulary, some Chinese writing skills including stroke order and how to pronounce each new character correctly. Let us begin with an introduction from today’s teacher who works at a primary school in Beijing. Let’s check out some of the 

00.06 – Teacher同学们你们好,我是北京市海淀区翠微小学张璇老师。这节课我们一起学习第一单元的三课:口,耳,目。

Tóngxuémen nǐmenhǎo wǒshì Běijīng Shì Hǎidiàn qū cuì wēi xiǎo xué zhāng xuán lǎoshī. Zhè jié kè wǒmen yīqǐ xuéxí dìyī dānyuán de dí sān kè: kǒu ěr mù。

Hello students, I am Teacher Zhang Xuan from Beijing Cuiwei school in Haidian. In this, our third in the series examing Chinese characters, we will look at the characters for mouth, ears, and eyes.

00.22 – Teacher同学们看,校园里的花都开了,小蝴蝶飞来飞去,美景吸引的图正的三位小朋友, 仔细看一看他们都在干什么?我们请同学们来说一说吧。

Tóngxuémen kàn, xiàoyuán lǐ de huā dōu kāi le, xiǎo húdié fēiláifēiqù měijǐng xīyǐn de tú zhèng de sān wèi xiǎo péngyǒu, zǐxì kànyīkàn tāmendōu zài gànshénme? Wǒmen qǐng tóngxuémen láishuō yīshuō ba。

Students look, flowers in the school playground have bloomed, the butterflies are flying here and there, and the 3 children in the picture are enjoying the beautiful scenery. Look carefully, what are they doing? Let’s ask the students to talk about it.

00.42 – student – 两个小女孩站在花丛旁看花。其周一个还伸出手指开心地数着有几多花。

Liǎngge xiǎonu:3hái zhàn zài huācóng pángkàn huā。 Qí Zhōu yī gè hái shēnchū shǒuzhǐ kāixīn de shǔ zhe yǒu jǐduō huā。

Two little girls are standing next to a cluster of flowers . One of the two has her finger extended pointing at the flowers and counting how many there are.

00.52 – student 2 – 一个小男孩儿听到声音,急忙走过来挥着手,和他们打招呼。

Yīgè xiǎo nánháir tīngdào shēngyīn, jímáng zǒuguò lái huī zhuóshǒu , hé tāmen dǎzhāohu.

Hearing their voices a little boy hurries over, greeting them with a wave.

1.00 – Teacher – 这两位同学观察的很仔细,表达的也很完整。

Zhè liǎng wèi tóngxué guānchá de hěn zǐxì, biǎodá de yě hěn wánzhěng.

The two students made very astute observations and expressed everything.

6.2 – Body parts in Chinese

In the next part of the class we learn the vocabulary for various body parts, starting with foot, hand, mouth, ear, and nose. Study this next section to learn how to pronounce and use these Chinese characters correctly.

01.06 – Teacher – 瞧,在这三个小朋友旁边还有五个身字朋友哪。你们都认识吗?自己先试着读读,不认识这些字的同学听老师读,你们跟着读。

Qiáo, zài zhè sān gè xiǎo péngyǒu pángbiān háiyǒu wǔgè shēn zì péngyou na. Nǐmen dōu rènshi mǎ?Zìjǐ xiān shìzhe dú dú, bùrènshí zhèxiē zì de tóngxué tìng lǎoshī dú, nǐmen gēnzhe dú.

Look, next to the three friends there are 5 Chinese characters. Do you know them? Try reading them yourself.  The students that don’t know the characters can read after me.

01.23 – Teacher – 足,手,口,目,耳。

zú, shǒu , kǒu, mù, ěr。

foot,hand, mouth, eye, ear.

1.34 – Teacher – 手和足这两个字的字音不容易读准确,听老师再读一遍。

Shǒu hé zú  zhè liǎng ge zì de zìyīn bùróngyì dú zhǔnquè。 Tīng lǎoshī zài dú yībiàn.
It is difficult to read the characters for hand and feet correctly. Listen to the teacher read them again.
1.44 – Teacher – 手,手,足,足。你们读对了吗?
Shǒu,shǒu,zú, zú. Nǐmen dú duìle mǎ?
Hand, hand, foot, foot. Did you read it correctly?
1.59 – Teacher – 好,我们一起来做个小游戏吧。老师出示那张字长,就请你指指哪个部位。
Hǎo wǒmen yìqǐlái zuò gè xiǎo yóuxì ba。 Lǎoshī chūshì nǎ zhāng zìcháng , jiù qǐng nǐ zhǐ zhǐ nǎge bùwèi。
Good,let’s play a game together. Teacher chooses a card and reads the character, you point to the (body) part.
2.11 – Teacher – 口,口,耳,耳。目,目。好,你们和老师指的部位一样吗?
Kǒu,Kǒu, ěr ,ěr。 Mù ,mù。 Hǎo, nǐmen hé lǎoshī zhǐ de bùwèi yīyàng mǎ。
Mouth, mouth, ear, ear. Eye, eye. Good, did you point at the same (body) part as the teacher?

6.3 – body parts and the verbs associated with them

We now know how to recognise some Chinese characters for body parts, and also how to pronounce them correctly. Before we start the next part, do you know which verbs we can associate with the different body parts? For example, we have learnt the Chinese character for mouth, but do you know how to say the verbs associated with the mouth: eat, drink, sing and talk.

2.36 – Teacher – 瞧,口字的样子多像张开的嘴巴呀。一起读读这个字:口。
Qiáo, kǒu zì de yàngzi duō xiàng zhāngkāi de zuǐba ya. Yīqǐ dú dú zhège zì: kǒu.
Look, the character for mouth looks like a wide open mouth. Lets read together: mouth.
Next our teacher guides us through some verbs associated with our mouth. This is an opportunity to learn some Chinese verbs
2.46 – Teacher – 口能帮助我们做什么?
Kǒu néng bāngzhù wǒmen zuò shénme
What can our mouth help us to do?
2.50 – Student – 口能吃饭,喝水, 还能说话,唱歌。
Kǒu néng chīfàn, hēshuǐ, hái néng shuōhuà, chànggē
The mouth can eat, drink and can also speak and sing.
2.56 – Teacher – 口能帮助我们说话,唱歌。我们在张口说话的时候一定要声音洪亮,让别人听得清。
Kǒu néng bāngzhù wǒmen shuōhuà, chànggē。 Wǒmen zài zhāngkǒu , deshíhòu yīdìngyào shēngyīn hóngliàng, ràng biéren tīngdé qīng。
The mouth helps us to speak and sing. When we open our mouth to speak we should speak confidently so people can hear us clearly.
3.08 – Teacher – 哪就请你再大声的读读这个字吧。口 。
Nǎ jiù qǐng nǐ zài dàshēng de dúdú zhège zì ba. kǒu.
Now, please read this character again: mouth.
Next we look at some objects that contain the character 口. Note that all of these words represent objects that contain some kind of hole, much like the character for mouth itself.
3.14 – Teacher- 看图,你能想到那些和口有关的词语呢?
Kàn tú, nǐ néng xiǎngdào nàxiē hé kǒu yǒu guān de cíyǔ ne?
Look at the picture, how does the character for mouth fit into these words. 
3.21 – Student – 瓶子的口就是瓶口。
Píngzi de kǒu jiùshì píngkǒu.
The finish of a bottle is called the bottle mouth.
3.24 – Student – 我在衣服上发现了领口和袖口。
Wǒ zài yīfu shàng fāxiàn le lǐngkǒu hé xiùkǒu。
When putting on clothes I find the neckline and the cuff.
3.31 – Teacher – 老师还发现了衣服上还有口袋呢。
Lǎoshī hái fāxiàn le yīfu shàng háiyǒu kǒudài ne。
Teacher has also discovered the word pocket (which also contains the Chinese character for mouth).
3.38 – Teacher – 再读读这个字,耳。耳朵能做什么?
Zài dú dú zhège zì。ěrduo néng zuò shénme?
Read this character again: ear. What can ears do?
3.42 – student – 耳朵能听到各种各样的声音。
ěrduo néngtīngdào gèzhǒng gèyàng de shēngyīn
Ears can hear all types of sounds.
3.46 – teacher – 那我们一起来听一听吧。
Nǎ wǒmen yìqǐlái tīng yī tīng ba。
Let’s listen together.
