Skills for IELTS Speaking

Linking

Signalling for Part 2

We can use signalling language during the IELTS Speaking part 2 test to show the examiner that we are moving on to a new section of our topic. Examples of signalling language include:

  • As for….
  • In terms of…
  • As regards to…
  • What else….

These can be used to help us navigate our way to the different sections of our part 2 speaking response. For example we can use them to move more smoothly between the prompts that are provided for us in the part 2 topic card:

Describe a building that you like

You should say:

Where it is

What it looks like

Why you like it

You should also say whether you plan to visit it in the future

I would like to talk about a building (where it is) in the UK called the Shard……

(what it looks like) In terms of it’s appearance, it is a beautiful modern structure with a glass facade….

(why you like it) As for why I like it, well, i’m not usually a fan of modern architecture… but this building is so stunning and inspiring it hard not to admire….

(whether you plan to visit it) what else? I should also mention that the interior is divided into offices and my bank is going to open a branch in the Shard next year. So I might get to see more of the building in the near future!
