3.04 – 你们听清楚了吗?  读 i 的时候要把牙齿对齐. (nǐ mén tīng qīng chǔ le má ?  Dú i de shí hòu yào bǎ yá chǐ duì qí). When pronouncing i open your mouth slightly and align your teeth.

Note: when pronouncing the pinyin final ‘i’ you should open your lips slightly, touch the tip of your tongue to the lower teeth slightly, move the corners of your mouth to the sides as much as possible. This will make what looks like a fake smile!

How to pronounce pinyin finals u and ü  in Chinese

4.12 – Teacher – 快看这两个字母, 你们能用编顺口溜的方法记住它们吗? (kuài kàn zhè liǎng gè zì mǔ , nǐ mén néng yòng biān shùn kǒu liū de fāng fǎ jì zhù tā mén má) (Let’s have a) quick look at these two letters. Do you have a rhyme you can use to help you remember them (their pronunciation)?

6.24 – student – 我发现戴上了声调小帽. 一上小点没有了. (wǒ fā xiàn dài shàng liǎo shēng diào xiǎo mào . yī shàng xiǎo diǎn méi yǒu le) I have discovered that they are wearing tone hats, not a small dot.

This is referring to the four tones illustrated at the top of each letter by a line. Usually when we write i it has a dot at the top. However, when writing i in pinyin the dot at the top is removed and replaced by one of the four tones which indicate pronunciation. The first tone, represented by a straight line is flat, The second is the rising tone, the third rising and falling and the fourth falling.

6.30 – teacher – 一上小点怎么不见了? 这是什么会是呢 (yī shàng xiǎo diǎn zěn me bù jiàn le. zhè shì shén me huì shì ne) Where has the dot on the top of the letter i gone? Why would this be?

6.36 – teacher – 小一是个爱漂亮她的头上戴着蝴蝶结呢. 当她戴上声调小帽的时候就把蝴蝶结遮住了 (xiǎo yī shì gè ài piāo liàng tā de tóu shàng dài zhuó hú dié jié ne .dāng tā dài shàng shēng diào xiǎo mào de shí hòu jiù bǎ hú dié jié zhē zhù le) Little i is a lovely girl with a butterfly bow, but when she wears her tone hat this covers the butterfly bow.
